Chiropractic and Epigenetics

by Curt White on 07/22/10

Ever since DNA was discovered in 1953 it has been our number one excuse for poor health, and lack of success. "I have diabetes. I inherited it from my mother." "I can't help it its in my genes." We've been taught that our appearance, behaviour, and health are the result of unchangeable DNA. The University of Utah Genetic Learning Center has discovered we can change the expression of our genetic code by altering the epigenetic layer covering our DNA effectively turning certain genes on or off. The epigenetic layer responds to external stimuli-everything from diet, stress, exercise and even our thoughts. The brain signals the changes needed and Chiropractic helps that signal reach its destination. This helps explain why patients recieving Chiropractic frequently report improvement in a variety of body functions other than the original back or neck pain that brought them in.

Workout Tips

by Curt White on 07/12/10

I remember when the emphasis in exercise was placed on cardio and hitting the target heart rate zone. Now strength exercises and short bursts of high intensity are becoming popular. I prefer to "superset" or combine two, three, or four exercises and rotate between them. This way you get your cardio and strength together and since you are rotating the exercises you don't need to rest between sets saving time. Remember to vary your repetition numbers when doing strength work. I tend to do alot of 10 and 20 repetition sets but occasionally I will do a 60 rep set. I like to throw in a 30 to 40 second jump rope in between the strength movements. After a series of Chiropractic treatments the body will benefit from and retain its progress through exercise better. As a Mooresville Chiropractor I am available for consultation.

Chiropractic and Optimum Sports Performance

by Curt White on 06/25/10

A 2006  research study showed that chiropractic adjustments increased muscle strength in leg muscles. The results were conclusive and imperative for any athlete; either professional or recreational. This shows that seeing a Chiropractor will benefit not only the athlete but also the workplace and manual labor of any kind.

The brain has to talk to muscles to fully recruit all motor units (individual parts of the muscle) during a maximal voluntary contraction. The chiropractic adjustment activates mechanoreceptors the part of the nerve responsible for firing the muscle and causing contractions.
The results of the study showed a  10% increase in  leg muscle strength after the chiropractic treatment. This  indicates that chiropractic care increases muscle strength in any individual and has far reaching affects in every type of athlete as well as  activities of daily living
These studies, along with many others conclude that a drug-free approach of chiropractic care is one of the best solutions to increase muscle strength. Being a Chiropractor in Mooresville I
see patients daily who report positive benefit from their treatment.

Preventing Back Pain In The Yard

by Curt White on 06/01/10

When doing yard work, using proper technique prevents injuries. Twisting, turning and bending can lead to back injuries.   Try these tips to reduce your risk of injury:

  1. Warm up with a short walk before you begin, followed by light stretching.
  2. Don't twist when raking, or digging. Keep your feet shoulder width apart with one foot forward. Alternate which foot you put in the front.
  3. Lift with your legs, not your back. To do so, bend at your knees when picking up heavy objects instead of bending over at the waist. Also don't twist your back as you lift. If you have to turn, rotate your entire body.
  4. Carry things close to your body. This lessens the strain .                        Don't stay too long in one position or do all the work using one arm. Switching it up can prevent muscle strain and spasms.
  5. Use comfortable rakes, shovels and other tools for your height and strength.

Remember that yard work is exercise. Doing too much, too soon can leave you sore, tired and hurt. Start slowly, take frequent breaks & drink plenty of water.  And be extra cautious when using power mowers and tools.

If you have back pain avoid heat for the first 48 hrs. Apply ice for 20 min. on and 20 min. off for several sessions.  Call your Chiropractor if you over do it.

Oxygen Therapy and Spinal Decompression

by Curt White on 05/06/10

During spinal decompression therapy one of the benefits is increased blood and oxygen pulled into the disc to cause healing. By giving the patient enhanced air (oxygen) during their treatment we are seeing better results. The cerebellum is in the back part of your brain and it controls all of your spinal musculature as well as your balance and coordinated movement. The cerebellum is the most dependent area of the body when it comes to oxygen. So that is another reason why we give you oxygen, to get you better faster by allowing your cerebellum to work better and relax the muscles. Studies have shown oxygen helps stimulate brain activity, improve strength, detox your blood, reduce stress, alleviate headache, remedy irregular sleep patterns, boost concentration, and strengthen the immune system.

Why Chiropractic Maintenance?

by Curt White on 04/14/10

The nervous system is a two way street the brain tells every cell and organ what to do and the body tells the brain what is happening. The nerve messages from brain to body occur billions of times a day. The body cells are constantly replacing themselves in response to stress. That is why an athletes muscles grow or a couch potato's shrink. People have pinched nerves and don't know it. The compromised nerves slow life giving impulses from the brain to the destination body part. That is where Chiropractic maintenance comes in. A Chiropractor can detect pinched nerves even if the patient doesn't feel any symptoms. Through x-ray, palpation, leg length, etc. we correct these silent killers to allow optimum health to happen. Chiropractors do three very important things. 1. Pain relief 2. Maintain the spine as we age 3. Promote optimum health & nerve flow.

Tips to prevent low back pain

by Curt White on 03/30/10

Stretch on a regular basis and before and after exercise. Sit in chairs with good support and use extra pillows behind your back when sitting on soft couches or chairs. Get up often and periodically walk around. Bend with your legs and keep your back straight. Try to control your weight. Another reason to not smoke is that it reduces blood flow to the spine causing spinal discs to degenerate. Reduce psychological and emotional stress. See your Chiropractor on a regular basis to prevent flare ups and maintain good spinal health. Chiropractic reduces stress on the nervous system naturally so in addition to helping backs adjustments can address deeper dysfunctions in your body.

Treatment Options For Low Back Pain

by Curt White on 03/22/10

About 85% of the population will experience low back pain at least once in their life. That's almost all of us. Often patients will present to my office with acute back pain. Maybe they bent over lifted or twisted wrong. Many have chronic back pain they have had for 10, 20, or 30 years and we help both. Medical Doctors will tell you there are a number of causes of back pain like pulled muscle, disc bulge, disc herniation, stenosis, facet syndrome, degeneration or arthritis. What they will do is give you medications, anti inflammatories, muscle relaxers or pain killers. Then they may do epidural spinal injections or surgery. I've had patients who have had multiple back surgeries. Here is how I treat back pain and why it is so effective. I check the spinal bones for alignment and motion. Due to the pressure our spines are under, segments become stuck and misaligned causing nerve and disc irritation. I take a natural approach to treatment using gentle spinal adjustments, infra red heat, electrotherapy or non surgical  spinal decompression. After unlocking and balancing the spine I give specific stretches and exercises to help. If patients try to exercise or stretch before the Chiropractor adjusts them, they often aggravate their back.  I am available for telephone consultations and look forward to hearing from you soon. We are located at exit 33 convenient to Mooresville, Statesville, Cornelius, Davidson, Troutman, Huntersville and the entire Lake Norman Community.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

by Curt White on 03/09/10

We have had quite a bit of interest in our spinal decompression therapy lately. Results have been great for chronic pain patients. The treatments are gentle and relaxing. The typical treatment plan is 20 visits with the goal being a long term correction and healing of many types of chronic spinal conditions such as: spinal stenosis, disc herniation, disc bulge, sciatica, degenerative spine, and spondylosis. Most facilities charge between $100 and $200 per session. Since insurance does not cover this can be a barrier for some. To make it available to more people we have set our fee at $50. I am available for telephone consultations and look forward to hearing from you. We are located at exit 33 in the Mooresville Gateway convenient to Mooresville, Statesville, Troutman, Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville.

Just What Is It Chiropractors Do?

by Curt White on 03/08/10

Chiropractors look at two things. The position of spinal bones or posture and how well those bones move. Almost nobody maintains correct posture due to the tremendous stress and force placed on our body just from normal everyday activities. Throw in a few bumps and jolts and spinal alignment gets thrown off. Sometimes we can get by with poor spinal balance for awhile but eventually the uneven pressure results in a stuck joint. This creates nerve pressure resulting in low back pain. neck pain, or even headaches. A Chiropractor treats the cause of the symptoms while drugs treat the symptoms. I have successfully treated thousands of patients with natural Chiropractic. We are conveniently located at exit 33 in Mooresville.
