Auto accidents can cause a wide range of injuries, varying in severity from minor to serious. Common conditions include:

  1. Whiplash: A neck injury caused by the rapid back-and-forth movement of the head during a collision, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
  2. Soft Tissue Injuries: Strains, sprains, and tears in muscles, ligaments, and tendons, particularly in the back and neck.
  3. Herniated Discs: The impact of a crash can cause spinal discs to bulge or rupture, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness in the back, legs, or arms.
  4. Spinal Injuries: Damage to the vertebrae, spinal cord, or nerves, which can result in significant pain, limited mobility, or even long-term disability.
  5. Fractures: Broken bones, especially in the ribs, spine, or extremities, due to the force of the collision.
  6. Concussions: Traumatic brain injuries caused by a blow or jolt to the head, leading to headaches, dizziness, or cognitive difficulties.
  7. Chronic Pain: Long-term pain in the back, neck, or other areas, often caused by untreated injuries or scar tissue.

Every few seconds, someone is involved in a car accident. Collisions, regardless of speed, can leave a lasting impact on those involved. Even a minor crash at just 8 miles per hour is strong enough to dent a steel bumper—imagine the strain it puts on the delicate ligaments in your neck. If an impact at such a low speed can harm your spine, consider the potential damage caused by collisions at 35, 45, or even 55 miles per hour. Many patients who visit my office for chronic neck and back pain have been suffering for decades, only to realize—after reviewing their history—that their discomfort began with an auto accident years ago. Often, they never connected their long-term pain and misery to that single incident, leaving the root cause untreated for far too long.

When the spine is thrown out of alignment, it begins to degenerate and wear down prematurely over time. It’s not a question of “if” this will happen—it’s a question of “when.”

If you or someone you care about has been in an auto accident, it’s crucial to have your spine examined immediately. Any symptoms you’re experiencing—such as pain or discomfort—are clear signals that your spine and nervous system may have suffered damage. Seeing a chiropractor who specializes in treating auto accident injuries is essential to address the problem before it worsens.

After being involved in an automobile accident, the most common thing people do is to go to the hospital for evaluation. If there are no broken bones, cuts, scrapes or lacerations, the emergency room physician will probably give you a prescription for an anti-inflammatory drug, a pain drug and/or a muscle relaxer. They will then give you icing instructions and suggest following up with your family physician if you’re experiencing symptoms after two weeks. Your family physician will prescribe the same types of medications. And when that doesn’t work, he’ll either refer you to some other type of medical specialist (such as a neurologist, or orthopedic surgeon).

While medications certainly have their place in healthcare, I am not a big fan of using them to treat musculoskeletal problems (such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, etc..) because they don’t really do much other than to mask symptoms. They don’t actually cure you or go after the root cause of your problems.

Instead of numbing your body with pain pills, a better choice is Chiropractic coupled with rehabilitation. Not all chiropractors do the same thing. So it’s important to choose one who has the training and equipment to treat auto accident injuries.
